Built across the Arno river, the Ponte Vecchio bridge remains one of the oldest and beloved bridge in the city of Florence. I cross this bridge at least 3 times a week to visit my best friend Kelly who lives across the river and the view will blow you away. Today the bridge houses not only local shops and restaurants but serves as a primary ground for street artists and musicians; You can hear the music gravitate towards you as I make my nightly strolls. The bridge is also nicknamed the jewelry bridge for all of its silver and gold shops. Its current appearance dates back to 1345 when it was built to replace a bridge which was destroyed by a flood. It is also the only bridge in Florence to survive world war II completely unscratched. The Ponte Vecchio is lit up at night and the view is absolutely breathtaking on both the north and south side of the bridge. There’s a great trattoria (not as formal as a ristorante) on the Ponte Vecchio called Armando thats serves the best lasagna you’ll ever have; The waiter Marco knows me by name because I go there at least once a week. This place has a great atmosphere that most tourist cant find anywhere else and for the first time in over a month since I’ve started this program I finally feel like I belong with the locals.
